With its Development-Related Postgraduate Courses, the DAAD has created an educational programme that has set several milestones on the way towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Highly trained local professionals networked with international partners play an important role in the development of their countries. They are the best guarantee for a better future with less poverty, more education and good health for all. German universities that offer international postgraduate courses with high relevance to development-related topics can apply for admission to the programme "Development-Related Postgraduate Courses". For courses in this programme, the DAAD sponsors selected persons from Developing Countries with a scholarship award, which enables them to acquire an internationally competitive degree in a Postgraduate Course with heavy emphasis on practical experience. Course focus: Agricultural production uses natural resources in diverse ways. These resources show complex interactions and are sensitive to human activities and interventions. Their appropriate management requires skilled individuals with both the biophysical and the socioeconomic background knowledge. The ARTS programme is designed as a research-oriented, multidisciplinary approach to expand students overall background in the basic and applied management of natural resources for agricultural development and research in (sub)tropical environments. Students develop a holistic, cross-disciplinary understanding and acquire a systems view of structure, use, interactions, endangerment and protection of natural resources. Graduates from the ARTS Master's programme (M.Sc.) are equipped with skills and tools to recognize and solve problems related to (sub)tropical resource management, thus - making them effective leaders for agricultural development - preparing them for agricultural and environmental research and development positions - providing an entry qualification for PhD programmes.

A scholarship award for the Agricultural Sciences and Resource Management in the Tropics and Subtropics course.
- After being admitted to the funding programme, the postgraduate course receives a set quota of scholarships per class intake. This quota is determined by application statistics and available budgetary resources. The number of scholarships awarded cannot exceed a ratio of 1:5 in relation to the applications. In addition, funding is provided for a preparatory German language course for the scholarship holders (generally two to six months) at a central language institute or the university. Administration of the scholarships follows directly via the DAAD through the Section responsible for the programme and according to the currently valid scholarship guidelines.
- Because resources from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) cannot be used for tuition fees at German universities, scholarship holders are to be released from payment of tuition.
- The funding also includes tutorial, professional and technical support through a framework agreement with the DAAD. The maximum amount for tutorial support is currently set at ¤ 18,000 p.a., for other assistance currently ¤ 80 per scholarship holder/per funding month. Within the scope of tutorial support and other assistance, further programme-related means of support for DAAD scholarship holders can be applied for (excursions, network meetings, course accompanying German language classes, material expenses and support subsidies for the scholarship holders, etc).
